Spirit of Gaia is a 63ft double canoe; her design is based on the ancient Pacific double canoes built by the Polynesians to voyage from island to island.
She was built in Cornwall and launched with a Hawaiian ceremony in 1992 in Devoran. She was designed and built by her owners James Wharram, Ruth and Hanneke.
Since her launching she has sailed the warmer parts of Europe and on round the world, visiting the Pacific Islands, New Zealand, Australia, Indonesia, and Sri Lanka and returned to the Mediterranean via the Red Sea. (On this voyage she was used to study the Pacific and Indian Ocean canoeform craft).
Spirit of Gaia is now based in Corfu and we like to share her with people who like to step out of the modern world for a little while and explore the sea.
Her accommodation is simple as the design dictates, but she has many private spaces, where one can retreat to, to be alone. Many like to sit on her bow walkway, to watch the sunset or to meditate away from the rest of the ship. Food is prepared in the big but simple galley, which with a large hatch can be open to the sky, the food is then eaten outside on the wide central deck, which has a fireplace in its centre.
Group bookings are preferred, but we can take bookings for individuals, couples or families with children whom we will try to match up with people with similar interests. We must have a minimum complement of 6 guests, so enquire and make your wishes known early so we can arrange a suitable match of interests.
Please bring:
- Bed linen and towels (pillows are provided).
- A light sleeping bag or blanket.
- Snorkelling kit.
- Suitable clothing, incl. Sarong and sun protection. (In Corfu it rarely rains, in the summer months it can be very hot, but in the spring and autumn the evenings can be colder)
Alteration or cancellation by us
We will do our best to honour the arrangement we have made with you. If there is a minor change before you depart, we will try to tell you before you go.
In the unlikely event that we become unable to provide a significant proportion of the charter you have booked after you depart, we will try to make alternative arrangements. If we have to cancel the charter before you depart for any reason other than non-payment by you, we will offer you a full refund.
Transport
We provide the Spirit of Gaia for charter. When you make arrangements with us, we will come to an agreement about the port of arrival and port of departure. It is your responsibility to make the travel arrangements to and from these ports.
Special requests
If you have a special request (e.g. dietary), please let us know before you arrive.
