Tiki 8m - Introduction

Designers, architects, artists often have 'themes', which they return to again and again in their creative life time.

One theme of mine has been an under 30 foot coastal cruising design that can safely cross an ocean. In the last 30 years this theme was expressed in the design of the 27 foot Tane/ Tanenui and Tiki 26 (of which a total of 1100 plans have been sold of these three designs) many of which have crossed oceans.

What enables one to develop a successful theme is not only the input of practical sailing experience, but the development of new materials.

The new TIKI 8m is built in composite GRP. GRP is not considered a new material, but with the new resins, core materials and improved laminating techniques, GRP composites have evolved greatly over the last 10 years. So has rope, webbing and buckle technology. We are using quick tightening straps made to high standards for us by English Braids to fasten the hulls to the crossbeams, far easier and quicker than metal fittings.

In Britain, Darren Newton and his team at Multimarine (www.multimarine.co.uk ) are leading experts in modern multihull composite building. The most recent major example of their work is the 60 foot 'Impossible Dream', built for a handicapped sailor. (see photos below) Impossible Dream is designed by Nick Bailey (www.nic.bailey.btinternet.co.uk) - this link shows additional photos of the boat.

Impossible Dream, built for a handicapped sailor so he can single handedly sail the boat. An impressive construction brimming with hydraulics and computer controls, but very beautiful.

With this assured excellent workmanship and moulding techniques we were able to design on 'the theme' a new curved hull shape, with more internal room and more hydrodynamic efficiency than the previous 26-27 footers.

After building 'Impossible Dream' Multimarine is now building a 'possible dream' for many.

Tiki 8m Design Data:

Demounts for trailing behind a family car

Trailability expands sailing waters to all the exciting areas of Europe (from Baltic to Algarve to Greek islands). Assembly of boat has been simplified and speeded up with the use of quick tightening webbing straps. We do not suggest that assembly is a light hearted project, but the advantages of being able to 'Sail Europe' in annual holidays and the money saved in storing the boat at home are of very high value.

With the use of individual hull trolleys the Tiki 8m can be launched on any sloping foreshore (a trailer ramp is not essential)

Simple Wharram Wingsail sloop rig, easy single handing

The Wharram Wingsail has been shown to be 10% more efficient than a fully battened bermudan sail due to it's lack of turbulence normally caused by mast and rigging. The mast of the Wharram Wingsail Rig is the same length as the boat - easy to raise and lower - easy to fit on trailer. No boom for safer sailing. Just two simple shrouds to tighten.

Flexyspace for flexible living

High solid deck cabins spoil good sailing and windward abilities, they also make trailer sailing difficult and cumbersome. Instead the Tiki 8m has a versatile flexible deck cabin, which goes from all weather sailing dodger, to at-anchor windbreak, to streamlined all-over decktent/cabin, giving double berth and wide living space that connects both hull cabins.

In each hull there is good sitting headroom, a comfortable single berth, a foot well with sliding seat and moulded space for a bucket (washing-up in one hull, toilet in the other) and enough room for a second berth, galley or chart table. The cabin sides are lined with slats of white poplar timber, giving a natural feel.

How you use this interior is up to the owner. Camping equipment bought at a high street store will make her a simple camping home. With experience you will make the perfect interior to suit your needs.

Deck space, sleeping space

The spacious cockpit seats 6-8 for day sailing and harbour parties. Tiki 8m makes a good day, family or sailing instruction boat.
The sunbathing trampoline between the bows is big enough for 3 people to lie on.
Tiki 8m can sleep 4-6 people. 2-4 singles in hulls, one double under deck tent.

Speed with shallow draft
The flared hulls with 1.20m (4ft) beam at deck level give a spacious feel to the hulls, without compromising the slim waterlines, giving the Tiki 8m an excellent turn of speed: 8-10 knots for sustained periods with stretches of 15 knots plus. The V-eed hull shapes with special shaping along the fine keel give all the lateral resistance needed, so no complex dagger boards or projecting keels. This means shallow draft at all times and with the stern hung rudder protected behind a skeg, ability to sail straight up a smooth beach.
Stability
On the outside of the Tiki 8m hull are 3 'Plimsol' markers indicating the loading of the boat, never before used on a multihull.
The RED triangle marks the waterline at 900 kg, the boat at its lightest sailing weight. This means the boat should be sailed with care or take one reef in the mainsail. (Hull lifting wind speed 21.5 knots)
The AMBER triangle marks the waterline at 1200 kg. (Hull lifting wind speed 24.5 knots)
The GREEN triangle marks the waterline at 1500 kg.
This sailing weight means safe cruising (hull lifting wind speed 27.5 knots), reefing only when the weather clearly tells you to at around Force 5.
The owner's manual gives full stability data.

Tiki 8m - Home finishing Kit

The economical way to get a professional boat.

This kit is available so people with a wish to do some of the finishing on their boat themselves can save money and get the satisfaction of being creative, without taking on the task of self building a complete boat. The kit comes with clear assembly drawings by Hanneke Boon, who has been responsible for the self building plans of Wharram catamarans for many years.

Remember that on any labour you pay us to do, you also have to pay VAT, i.e. an extra saving of 17.5 % if you do this yourself.

The work that needs doing on this kit is relatively little. The hulls, interiors and decks are already completely bonded and watertight, with windows fitted to a professional standard. Hatches are glass moulded and finished and the main companion hatch ready fitted on its stainless steel track (tube). This means the hulls are completely watertight when you get them and able to be stored outside.

All that remains to be done to these hulls is:

Interior:

  • Varnish or paint bulkheads and fit inspection hatches.
  • Fit White poplar wooden slats to the centre part of the hullsides. Sand and varnish.
  • Paint remaining areas (paint not supplied), or finish in other way.
  • Sand and varnish ply lids for under bunk storage spaces.
  • Make bunk cushions (not part of kit).

Exterior:

  • Fit hardwood gunnels, these will give the hulls a more classic feel.
  • Fit mooring cleats to bow and stern decks.
  • Fit stem and stern heads. These will need cutting out and shaping.
  • Fit luff tracks to inner cabin sides, into which will slide the trampoline cockpit seats.
  • Fit chain plates to the hull sides and some U-bolts to the decks for the jib sheets.
  • Fit dodger hoop fittings to cabin top.

To finish the cockpit:

  • Bolt on sheet winches, jib lead blocks and cleats.
  • Screw/bolt on webbing fasteners for the trampoline seats.

To finish the crossbeams:

  • Screw/bolt on mast foot, mainsheet fitting, jib halyard leads and clutch.

To finish mast:

  • Fit mast foot, crane, tangs and mast cap. This requires you to cut some slots and drill holes.

All that remains is making the rudders, tillers and gaff for which clear drawings are supplied. If you don't feel happy having to do this we can quote for cutting and gluing them up for you.

The rudders are attached to the hulls with the 'Wharram Lashing Method', giving a very streamlined hull/rudder joint that has been proven to last for more than 10 years on many other Wharram Tikis.
