tiki 26 - 'gin pole'
I'm aiming to lower my aluminium mast tomorrow and want to make up a 'gin pole'. I can't measure up because i'm a long way from the boat. I thought a bit of 3" X 2" timber would do the trick but i'm not sure how long it needs to be. i'm guessing at about 8' long? Has anyone lowered a tiki 26 mast with out a gin pole? Thanks, John

Re: tiki 26 - 'gin pole'
I believe 8' will work. . .I measured for a gin pole a few months ago and can't find the notepad that I wrote in :( I am using the cutoff from my stern tube, and need to trim it to size; I have the forward beam off its locating blocks to paint underneath it, so it must be replaced before I can get the actual measurement again.

Well, at least I didn't tell you to cut it short  I measured my boat, and the distance between the forward side of the forebeam's top chord and the front of the mast step is: 68 1/2" (1.7399 meters) I'm using a strop wrapped around the forebeam to shackle a block for the line up to the gin pole's top. The line is then going back to one of my winches at the rear of the cockpit. YMMV! ;)

Here's a few shots of my setup: Gin pole rigged up and ready to start the raising. 2/3 of the mast extends past the aft beam. My buddie would lift the mast as I would pull; we got it up to about 10 degrees off vertical and then I used one of the rear shrouds, with a bit of extra line, to tie off to the aft beam, thus preventing overhauling!

Re: tiki 26 - 'gin pole'
As it happens i managed to lower my mast before i saw the pictures. In retrospect it wasn't too difficult but as it was the first time i was v. tentative, and it felt rather scary. My gin pole wasn't as neat as yours but worked ok. thanks for the v. helpful pictures. I'm sure that they will help a lot of people in the future. John
