Thoughts on Tiki Reefing Setup...
I've got two in mind. One, in an old article by James, I saw this image illustrating pennant reefing of a Wharram wingsail. This would appear to have the enormous benefit of keeping the mainsail under complete control while in the act of reefing. This could also be used on a jib with reef points. Do you suppose there are any disadvantages, ie, interruption of the air flow at the leech of the sail, due to the cleats and pennants? Two, it occurred to me that using a double block rather than a single block for the mainsheet traveler, I could use the second sheave to run a line with a snapshackle to the desired reef grommet. This line would run to a camcleat and would also keep the main under control while I transferred the mainsheet's shackle to the reef grommet. This would appear to be the simpler of the two systems, and one I could test without putting holes in the sail. What do you think, sailors?

Kim, The image from JWD did not show on my screen. I like the second idea and will try it when the time comes. Meanwhile I'm sawing wood and mixing epoxy. Thanks for your post; I'll keep track of it. Bruce

Hi Bruce, Hmm, it shows on my machine; the image is hosted on Flickr. :?: A safe, secure method of reefing is really necessary: trying to hold on to a flogging sail while you transfer the tack is guaranteed to add a number of gray hairs to your head! Good news on the sawdust and epoxy front :) It gets you a boat 8-)

Re: Thoughts on Tiki Reefing Setup...
I was down at the boat today setting up the main sheet in preparation for hanging the mainsail, and realized that an actual double-block would not work, as the sheave for the reefing line would be facing the wrong direction. So what I did was to shackle another single block to the junction of the mainsheet purchase and the traveler block. The new single block thus is facing the proper direction. I'll post shots when I get the whole thing finished, which will be tomorrow afternoon, if all goes well.

Re: Thoughts on Tiki Reefing Setup...
I do the down market version of this when sailing: bowline on the lower cringle and then run the line up through the upper cringle, pull it in and tie it off. I find this more controllable than moving the mainsheet shackle up a cringle and lets me let out a reef more easily as I don't have to move the mainsheet shackle. I like the idea of the cleats, my concern would be ensuring that they could take the load as at least a significant portion of the forces post reefing would be transmitted to the main sheet through the cleat rather than being spread out evenly in the fabric around the cringle, but I guess that is why it specifices a reef point close the leach.

Re: Thoughts on Tiki Reefing Setup...
Hey, sounds like it works. . .Not having to move the mainsheet tackle is where its at! I think the cringles take the lion's share of the load due to the pennant lines' friction, with the cleats being an easy tie-off point. I do like your method though: no extra holes in the sail. I'll give it a try on both my main and jib.

Re: Thoughts on Tiki Reefing Setup...
Well, here's a few shots of the pennant reefing setup on Vaea's mainsail: (click for full-size image) [url=http://s929.photobucket.com/albums/ad131/kgwoo/Vaea/?action=view&current... These were all taken at the second reef. At present, I am using a slip knot to hold the pennant rather than a cleat thru-bolted to the sail. [url=http://s929.photobucket.com/albums/ad131/kgwoo/Vaea/?action=view&current... [url=http://s929.photobucket.com/albums/ad131/kgwoo/Vaea/?action=view&current... [url=http://s929.photobucket.com/albums/ad131/kgwoo/Vaea/?action=view&current... I set up the 2 reefs in the foresail in the same manner. I also took the time to mark the halyards at the full hoist, first reef, and second reef positions. This should make life easier! ;)

Hello Kim, I'm Roger from Brazil, I stay study plans and I will building one T21 or T26. I prefer the 26 'but here in Brazil is difficult to find an aluminum tube of 5 ". From 8 m so much worse. But 4 " exists alloy T6061 with 1 / 8 thick with 6 m long, and is cheap . U.S. $ 125.00 (dollar). My idea is: Using a 4" -mast in tiki 26 being the top 1 m of wood and standing with a 1 m of wood in foot. what do you think?
