Sail Straps
My father in-law is building (slowly) a Tiki 31 and wanting us to help make the sails. In looking at the plans I don’t see anything about the straps or zippers I have heard mentioned when talking to others. The zipper I’m sure is straight forward so I’d like to focus on the straps. How many are there and at what spacing and width is each? How are they connected and do they “unfasten” at one side to facilitate installing and uninstalling the sail with the mast up? If so what is this fastener. I have looked over and over the plans (which are otherwise so easily followed I think the kids could build the boat with minor supervision) and just don’t see any reference to it. Thanks for the help to anyone with the knowledge.

Re: Sail Straps
On our Tiki 30, if memory serves me correctly, the straps are at the top, bottom and each reef point. They are joined with very simple interlocking metal buckles. The zipper is to one side of the sleave.

Re: Sail Straps
Thanks Robert, We were looking through some of the pictures online and I think the straps show up as shadowed or shaded areas when the sun shines through so we’re starting to get a better idea. You don’t have an idea on where to get a picture of those buckles do you or a supplier?

We will be on the boat at the weekend and I will try and remember to take a photo.

Here is a series of photos showing the bending on of a wingsail: you can see the buckles and the straps... http://www.themultihull.com/wharram2/st1.htm The first picture:

Re: Sail Straps
Apologies for not getting the photo - we are in the final throws of fitting out and it is a bit frantic. The photo Kim showes is the same as ours. The buckles are made by Seasure on our sail (from Jeckyls).

Re: Sail Straps
Thanks a lot for those Kim. My father in law emailed Wharram on this and here is the reply he received. There are no zippers on our sails and I am not sure what you mean by the “straps”. Their own recommended sail maker knows about them it appears. Is this how out of touch they have become?
