we are building sailing vessels...but we have to deal with these outboards. can anyone tell from his experience with the 9.9 on the tiki 38? How much gasoline do they use in calm conditions? How can I economise gasoline? Maybe by runnig just one motor ?

Its a long time since I ran the Tiki 38 but I can tell you that you only need one outboard in light conditions. A lightly laden T38 could go 6+ knots with one engine, and would go 7 knots with two. So the only benefit of running two at a time is if you have to punch your way through a strong swell. Consumption figures I no longer recall, somebody else here will know for sure.

I can talk about my 32.5 feet Tiki. Fully equipped for cruising she's about 3'500 to 3'800 kg. In flat sea she makes easy at 2/3 throttle 5 kn in flat waters. This decreases enormeous in waves, currents or when motoring straight into the wind, what is rarely necessary. After a bit more than 200 hrs with my Honda 10HP the average consumption is 2.6 ltr/hrs. This is very low in tropical climate.
For a Tiki 38 I'd choose a much stronger engine, may be even a diesel with longshaft (I fear lightenings with my 100 ltrs benzin on board) and a 6 hp dinghi outboard as a minimum standy.
