Wind generator on a Tiki 30
Hi, We have a forgen wind generator to fit (no nasty blades swinging round). We are looking at where to fit it and are currently opting for a tripod structure above the aft end of the cabin and have been advised to site it at least 6 ft above the cabin roof to get clear wind. Does anyone has any experience that would support or question this? Thanks

Re: Wind generator on a Tiki 30
What is a "foreign" wind generator? One with no blades? I'm piqued. On Abaco , our Tiki 30 we installed a 160 watt solar panel. This has provide full batteries since. David

The forgen is a cylinder, you can see details at http://www.seateach.com/Forgen.asp. We have solar panels but being in the UK we can not rely on solar power and this provides additional round the clock trickle charging.

Robert , that Forgen wind generator looks cool, thanks. I had not seen that before. My only thoughts are that hiegher is better from a power generation standpoint and worse from a sailing standpoint. David

This is forgen I used to have similar considerations about my old gens vulnerability on my old MacGregor 36..... I made a tube in each hull and mounted my gen on a pole that could be transferred from hull to hull as needed Quick connect wiring completed the job The Mac has inboard rudders, mounting tube was outboard and aft of rudderpost. On a Tiki with externally hung rudders you'd need to fabricate some kind of saddle to straddle the rudders so as to not interfere with them I wouldn't bother with as it anything other than a trickle charger (in conjunction with a small solar panel) for weekday topping up of batteries....better products around Rutland 504 IMO Produces 25 Watts in 19 knots compared to Forgens 12 watts in 15 knots

Re: Wind generator on a Tiki 30
We only need trickle charging as the solar panels do the job most of the time and we just wanted to keep the power going in when sailing during the night or poor weather. We want to mount it on the end of the cabins to avoid weight in the ends which meant something that did not need much room - hence the forgen. If we wanted loads of power when at anchor I would probably go for something that you could hoist in the rigging.
