Die Lapita-Expedition (German)

Wharram Shop:

Book by Klaus Hympendahl, in German.

The Lapita Voyage began in the first week of November 2008, when two 38ft Wharram Tama Moana designs, built in the Philippines, set sail on a 4,000Nm voyage along the island chains of the Philippines, Indonesia, New Guinea and the Solomons.

Aboard were James Wharram and Hanneke Boon on one boat and the author Klaus Hympendahl on the other, with changing German crew members.

Their desitination was Anuta and Tikopia, two tiny, remote islands at the Eastern end of the Santa Cruz islands, where the boats arrived mid March 2009 and were donated to the islanders for their future inter island transport.

This expedition on two double canoes based on traditional Polynesian design was a major expedition in Experimental Archaeology. It was the first exploration of one of the possible migration routes into the central Pacific by Ethnic sailing craft.

This book is Klaus' personal account of sailing the Lapita Voyage on 'Lapita Tikopia'. The hardback book is illustrated with over 100 colour photos.
