new to forum, new to Tiki 30
Greetings all, I live on Kauai, north shore, and have recently bought plans for a Tiki 30. I have spent the last weeks.. months? reading the old, and new, forum posts, various Wharram stuff, builders pages, blogs and all that the web offers up. Study plans and the designs book as I became more confidant. So the ply is on order, the resin will take a few weeks and the plans may turn up in another 2-3 weeks. So I am commited , and probably should be. I'm not sure how the T30 will behave in our water, besides pitching a bit probably, and being at least single reefed most of the time... but thats all ok. Primary use will be to fish offshore, and some interisland trips, charter maybe but very casual. I am most grateful to find a forum, or 'community' to latch on to and will most likely pester it, you, with silly questions... though I will try to keep them at least coherent. Meanwhile, more work to dry in the 'shed'. Cheers, Sam

Sounds good, Sam! Look forward to hearing of your adventures :) My wife has visited Kauai to see a friend of hers that now lives in Hanapepe. She enjoyed the beauty of Kauai. Kim

Congrats, you will be very happy with the Tiki 30 there. The boat won't pitch unduly, but it will follow the surface of the sea. The Tiki 30 also has a very conservative sail plan and likes a breeze. We have sailed ours at 12-13 mph regularly with peaks of 16-17. with big pacific swells you will probably be able to hit twenty on occasion. Have fun and we are all counting on pictures. Re: new to forum, new to Tiki 30
Thanks Kim and David. Photos and all as I get going. I have hope for the 30 here, and thanks for the encouragement. Only other cat I've sailed was a Crowther 40 (streched 36) from Plymouth to Faro. We had a dime size hole in the cabin floor. When the bridge deck slammed a geyser hit the cabin roof... kinda fun way to get a laugh through Biscay. David- your documentation of the red 'show' boat have helped me sort out some of the T30 details, and beautiful work btw. Kim- I have a question for you on the synthetic thread... and yup Kauai is an unbelievable place. We have a tiny farm on the north shore, hardwood, fruit, avos, peppers and cacao.... and so far 2009 - 115" of rain. Cheers, Sam

Re: new to forum, new to Tiki 30
Update - Ive made it up to the 2nd plank on both hulls, well almost, there is some tidy work to do on fillets and another layer of epoxy here and there. I've abandoned using wire 'stitches' and adopted David's method of using screws and an idea I ran into - because I was too cheap to buy more clamps- that uses all thread, washers and wingnuts (naturally) instead. This method can be used to compress, or expand, any part of the hull. More holes to fill later, but hopefully less fairing.

Big progress on the boat! I'll bet you can keep working all winter, eh? :)

Re: new to forum, new to Tiki 30
hi Kim, yes I could work all winter, happily it doesnt get cold enough to cause problems with the epoxy, although I have recently had the humidity/cloudy epoxy problem. It may be a rapid temp change as much, or along with, the humidity... but not a worry as it's a cosmetic issue if at all. I do have a deadline to be in the water so I must keep as hard at it as I can. ... or until the build kitty goes flatline. Sam
