Scale Model Building

Hi,
  I just ordered the study plan of the TIKI 30 to build a scale model.  I am considering 1:12, so the 30 foot model will be 30 inches long.  Does anyone have experience modeling this before building?  If so, did you use Balsa and what scale did you use?
