I've almost finished the restoration of my Tiki 21. I wondered if you can advise me on whether the lashing cleats are necessary or if you are using another method of tying off the lashings. The cleats that I took off my boat seem a little flimsy and I'm worried that this could be a weak point.
How do you do your lashings - photo's would be great.

I'll take a shot of my beam lashing Sunday and post it. . .I tie a buntline hitch that goes around the lashing cleats mounted on the sides of the boat (roughly 5x6 inches on a tiki 26, pull it tight and then begin wrapping the line around the beam, under the lashing cleat, until I have 4 wraps of (1/4") line around the beam. I finish the lashing by taking the end around one side of the lashing and pulling it hard under the lashing a few times, with the last time being a half-hitch pulled down hard under the lashing. Before sailing, I then frap the lashing itself which really takes any remaining slack out of the lashing.

The frapping has not been done yet. I have to paint the last of the outboard topsides and the beam ends, as you can tell. . . ;)
