Trailering the Tiki 30?
Has anyone trailered their Tiki 30? I've just gotten my plans, but it's not too early to think about the trailer. In March we're going to need a trailer for another activity, so I'd like to get one that could then be used for the Tiki 30. I'd figured on a 24ft flat deck, but then the study plans say a 17ft deck 24ftLOA is all that's needed. This smaller trailer would serve out purposes also, but I'm unclear how to support a 30ft boat on a 17ft deck. I would appreciate any thoughts on this topic. Ed

Re: Trailering the Tiki 30?
I trail a PAHI31 which must be similar. I use a 15ft flatbed 28ft loa with three 6"x 2" timbers across the bed to carry the weight. It could be 1or 2ft shorter. I fit a strut of 4x2 timber bolted to the bow-beam and the drawbar this stops any bounce. Also my axles are further apart than usual as otherwise the long A-frame drawbar overbalances the trailer when empty making it impossible to manhandle. I do not have the design for your trailer but I think it may be too short at 24ft. If the axles are central under the bed and the boat is centered on the bed then-- Bow to center of hull =15 + 8 1/2 ft [half the bed] = 23 1/2 ft which is the distance from bow to back of bed. At 24ft this puts the hitch only 6"ahead of the bows--not enough. Try a sketch with your trailer plans - place the boat central to the axles, that may not be the same as the center of the bed. Can I suggest that if you are not ready to start on the hulls right away that you might find space to make hatches, rudders, crossbeams or anything you can, it will be a great help later. This was how I"eased"myself into my re-build and it really helped. BEST OF LUCK

Re: Trailering the Tiki 30?
Hi Seamus, I got out the plans, trailer data and graph paper to sketch out the issues. This is my result. Given that Tiki - 30-ft LOA, Length bow to BH2 -- 9.2-ft (from the plans I believe these are the correct support locations) Length bow to BH6 ---23.3-ft Height of bow ---------5-ft Assumption: CG of TIki 15-ft aft of bow given hulls are nearly symmetrical fwd/aft. Anyone have the actual CG location? :?: Trailer hitch to deck length -- 3.5-ft (could for extra cost get 5-ft) Therefore if I set the Tiki so that: Bow overhangs, fwd of deck 1.5-ft(2-ft aft of hitch) Then Hitch to bow length ------------2-ft This could be closer since the bows are higher than the pickup truck tailgate,i.e. hitch to gate top 3-ft, bow height 5-ft. Trailer deck fwd edge to BH2 --- 7.7-ft Trailer deck fwd edge to BH6 --- 21.8-ft Then a 22-ft deck length or greater could work. The standard flat deck car trailers axle center will be 60% aft of either hitch of deck fwd edge, I think deck edge makes more sense. I have an email in to the manufacturer to get the actual location. Then on 22-ft deck the axle is at 13.2-ft. This puts axle center 14.7-ft aft of Tiki bow. On a 24-ft deck the axle is 15.9-ft aft of Tiki bow. This also only gives a 4.5-ft rear overhang. With the extra equipment I should be able to get the 10-15% tongue weight needed. See any errors in my thought process?? I guess in the plans when Wharram says a 17-ft deck and 24-ft LOA, it’s a deck with a 7-ft length ahead of the deck to the hitch. I could get one built this way but a stock design will be less expensive. It would be lighter weight but my truck has plenty of reserve capacity in this situation.

Re: Trailering the Tiki 30?
Nice photos. You seem to have this sussed yourself. In my experience I often have to almost jack-knife the rig when reversing up to the slip or parking in a yard. For this reason I like to have 3ft or so clear between the bows and the hitch. Also a boat a little too far back might have the balance corrected with gear [or even a bag of sand] but I would prefer not to have to. For me the 22ft bed looks just a little small. I am a little surprised that this trailer is cheaper than having one made. Here [Ireland] in our present economy - or lack of one - I would expect the reverse. There are lots of fabricators out there looking for work?? I can launch and assemble in a day and then a second day for rigging etc. without working too hard. And so once again--good luck!!
