I pirated an idea posted from the web to place a stainless steel pin fore and aft under the dolphin stay in the dolphin striker, to spread the load and help avoid splitting of the striker. I used a short piece of stainless tubing instead of rod. The idea was to use the tubing to run some stainless wire through and captivate the stay from falling out of the slot. See attached photo.
On second thought I could have used rod for more strength and allowed some of the rod to protrude out of the striker; then use the ends sticking out as horns of a cleat to secure the stay in the slot with the stainless wire. Either way it will work.
