Tama Moana - Child Of The Sea Study Plan (Digital Download)

Find the right boat for you

Wharram Study Plans are intended to provide more detail than is available in the Design Book. In particular, they will help you decide if a particular boat design is for you.

The most important part of the Study Plan is the Materials List, which will list the major boat building materials requirements so you can cost your project in your own area.

We feel sure that after studying these plans you will appreciate the quality and detail of the Building Plans, which, for the more recent designs, are more like a course in wooden boat building than just a plan set.

Study Plans are available as a Hard Copy or Digital Download. Downloads are instant access and eliminate postage costs, which is particularly beneficial for international customers. Digital download customers will receive an email with download instructions upon checkout completion.

Hard Copy Study Plans are being phased out and will no longer be available after stock has sold out, at which point they will be digital only. Get your hard copies while you can.

Wharram Shop:

The Tama Moana (Child of the Sea) has the traditional hullshape of the islands of Tikopia and Anuta. She is built in strip planking over plywood backbone and bulkheads. Her rig is traditional crabclaw and she is steered with steering paddles/side rudders.

Ethnic Designs as Canoe Craft have a basic design principle of maximum boat for minimum cost. Building and sailing one you can be a research participant in a major attempt to recover and preserve the practical, design, handling aspects of Man's first offshore sailing vessels.

Two Tama Moana designs sailed the Lapita Voyage from the Philippines to Tikopia and Anuta in 2008-9, where they were donated to the island populations who are now using them as their autonomous transport.

Due to its simplicity this design is also a very economical boat to have ready-built.
