There is a Tiki 31 for sale, and I was wondering what I should look for when checking a Wharram out for purchase. I don't have a feel for what a boat of this type is worth. This one looks like it will require plenty of TLC, so I'm not sure it's worth the asking price.

Tiki 31 for sale
Just a couple of observations.
The boat has been built to design, a big plus.
It has a cheap paint job which has basically completely degraded. This is a big red flag, as it may indicate the quality of the build.
The engine well looks like it is degraded, which is also not a good sign.
Having said that, the price is under what a good example should be worth.
You would have to determine if the build is up to standard and it was cheaply finished, in which case it would be a fair price, or if the whole build was cheap and hasty, in which case it would be a hasty buy.
If you dont have the building experience to tell for yourself, you should get someone who can tell you to have a look.
Ask them why it is good or bad. If they cannot give you a clear and comprehensive report of why they came to that conclusion, then they probably are not in a position to give you an accurate appraisal.

I´ve build and own an tiki 31 by myself, so I have some experience with this boat. The boat in the pictures looks neglected. I think a lot of plywood will be rotten. You can see it at the hatches, the layers of plywood are separated at some places. Since the beams looses all the paint they may be rotten too. And I think the masts will be in the same condition. Check the hulls for rot at all places, especially the keel and where the rudder is atteched to the hull at the skeg.
To bring this boat back to life will require a lot of work - you have to sand everything down, rebuild some - if not most -parts, maybe reglas some parts, paint everything new.
I paid for all the material of my tiki 31 - plywood, epoxy, paint, sails, used engine, ropes, wires, electronics and so on about 25.000 Euros.
I would not buy this boat for $ 14.000 if the wood of the hull, the beams and the masts are not in a good condition.
